Despite what you’ve heard, Tijuana Limo isn’t the long-rumored unreleased Ferrante & Teicher lounge cover of the annoying Herb Alpert standard: It’s the thing in the above photo, spotted by reddit user tronx69 just south of the border.
This isn’t the only stretched Bug out there — if you’re getting married in the U.K., you can rent one for the ceremony — and in retrospect, we’re not sure why its existence even surprises us. Customizers tend to work with whatever’s available, after all. This one is no saggier than most custom limos we’ve seen, but we’ve got to imagine it’s pretty anemic even if it did get the 1.6-liter fuel-injected motor installed in later Mexican Bugs.
We’re not sure the world needs more of these, but lest you weep for the desecration of a vintage VW, remember that they were built in Mexico for around a half a century; assembly of knockdown kits began in 1961, and full production of Mexican Beetles continued until, incredibly, 2003. So this isn’t necessarily a rare or vintage piece of equipment. And if you had to choose between a life of relative luxury as a goofy custom limo or the built-to-be-abused fate of a Baja Bug, we can’t imagine it’s a tough call for a car to make
