The House of Mexico finally has its own cottage and will celebrate with a Grand Opening on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 4:30 p.m.
The House of Mexico, a nonprofit community organization, is part of the House of Pacific Relations (HPR) International Cottages at Balboa Park in San Diego.
Mexico was among the countries represented in the original 15 cottages that were built in Balboa Park for the 1935 California Pacific International Exposition. However, the House of Mexico eventually disbanded for unknown reasons. There were at least two efforts to restart the House of Mexico between the 1950s and the 1970s. The most recent effort led to the House of Mexico being accepted back into the House of Pacific Relations in 2004. Since then, the volunteer organization has worked to raise funds for construction of a cottage. The years of hard work and efforts by countless volunteers and donors have resulted in the House of Mexico finally having a physical presence in Balboa Park. The House of Mexico is dedicated to fostering awareness, appreciation, and understanding of Mexico and its beautiful culture and traditions.
The Grand Opening will feature several VIP dignitaries including San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria. The festivities will include Mariachi and Ballet Folklorico performances and the official ribbon cutting.
Due to space limitations and health/safety concerns, the Grand Opening is an invitation-only event.
